CONSERVATION FRAMING
Just as you protect your clothing by cleaning it in recommended ways and storing it properly to protect it from moisture and insects, you want to protect your art work from possible effects of dirt, moisture, light and insects. Conservation framing means that we will use only high-quality acid free materials designed to protect paper artwork and special techniques above and beyond ordinary framing to help preserve the artwork.
In conservation framing, no materials or techniques are used that cannot be reversed, leaving the art undamaged and in its original state.
The DON'TS of conservation framing:
The following procedures are either not reversible or can have a negative effect on your valuable artwork!
- Don't ask to have art mounted permanently by heat, glue or any other mounting method
- Don't cut down the picture to fit a frame you already have
- Don't have the artwork placed directly against the glass
- Don't select mats or other materials for your frame that have a high acid content.
ACID-FREE MATS AND BACKING:
The effect of acid on a piece of paper is as detrimental to that paper as any corrosive element is to metal. Eventually that acid will discolor and utimately eat away at the paper.
Fortunately, today, there are 100% acid free materials that are acceptable for use on any type of art. At GJ CLONINGER and CO., we only use 100% acid free mats on all of our custom framing. We believe that art work should last, in an acid free environment, it will have a much longer life if kept out of direct light and extreme climates.
LIGHTING:
The effect of light on art is gradual and not readily apparent. It is difficult to spot until much damage has been done. Ordinary picture frame glass will do little to filter damaging light rays. Conservation ultraviolet (UV) glass is available in several grades that will filter many of the harmful light rays.
Avoid putting your artwork in bright sunlight, direct or indirect which contains high levels of energy. When artwork is exposed to such lighting, the energy present in the light speeds a chemical reaction in the paper, causing it to become brittle. Strong light can also react with the pigment of the dyes, inks or paints, causing fading or bleach of the art.
