FRENCH MATTING
French Matting is a beautiful and tasteful way to enhance a framed piece of art. It can consist of several lines of different colored inks and washes that are hand applied to the mat. Additionally, a stripe of authentic marble paper can be added to bring out the colors in the art. This technique has been practiced for many years and is particulary beautiful on antique etchings and prints.
It is 100% hand done by a staff artisan with water-based inks and dusting powders as well as french marble papers. In addition to the lines and marble paper, we have artisans on staff who will custom paint directly on the mat (see holly sample to the right). We have hundreds of ink colors and marble papers to choose from, so that we can perfectly complement your art.
French Matting can be done with just about any type of paper, see the sample column to the right that shows a custom mat that was made with a strip of paper that was a photocopy of a two dollar bill.
